What does the area calculator do?

What is the difference between area and perimeter?

For example, a square with a side length of 5 units has an area of 25 units² and a perimeter of 20 units. Area is needed for covering, painting or flooring; perimeter is needed for borders, fencing or edge length.
Area is expressed in square units, while perimeter is expressed in length units. The calculator displays perimeter only for shapes where the entered measurements are sufficient.
How do you calculate the area of a square or rectangle?
For a square, all sides are equal, so the area is the side length multiplied by itself. For a rectangle, the area is length multiplied by width.
Square area: a². Rectangle area: a × b. A square with side 6 has an area of 36 units²; a rectangle measuring 8 × 5 has an area of 40 units².
For both shapes, the calculator also shows perimeter: 4 × a for a square and 2 × (a + b) for a rectangle.
How do you calculate triangle, parallelogram and trapezoid area?
For triangles, parallelograms and trapezoids, height is the key measurement. Height means the perpendicular distance to the chosen base; it is not the same as a slanted side.
- Triangle area: (base × height) / 2.
- Parallelogram area: base × height.
- Trapezoid area: ((parallel side 1 + parallel side 2) / 2) × height.
For these shapes, height must be measured perpendicular to the base. Using a side length or a visual estimate instead of the true height can produce an incorrect area.
How do you calculate circle and ellipse area?
For a circle, this calculator uses radius. If you know the diameter, divide it by 2 before entering the value as the radius.
Circle area: π × r². Ellipse area: π × a × b. In an ellipse, a and b are the semi-major and semi-minor axes; if you have full axis lengths, divide them by 2 first.
For a circle, perimeter is calculated as 2 × π × r. For an ellipse, the calculator displays an approximate perimeter because an ellipse does not have a simple exact perimeter formula like a circle.
Why is rhombus area calculated from diagonals?
In this calculator, rhombus area is calculated from the two diagonals. The diagonals divide the rhombus into right-triangle regions, so the area is half the product of the diagonals.
Rhombus area = (d₁ × d₂) / 2. For example, if the diagonals are 10 and 6, the area is 30 units².
The calculator also derives the side length from the diagonals and shows the perimeter, based on the standard property that rhombus diagonals bisect each other at right angles.
What does units² mean?
The calculator displays results in generic square units. This means the result takes the square of whatever length unit you used for the inputs.
If all measurements are entered in meters, the result can be read as m². If they are entered in centimeters, the result is cm². The calculator does not convert between units; all inputs must use the same unit.
If one measurement is in meters and another is in centimeters, the result will not be meaningful. All length inputs should use the same unit.
Is this the same as a square meter calculator?
The area calculator uses geometric formulas for selected shapes. A square meter calculator is usually used for practical measurements such as rooms, walls, floors, land or surface coverage.

When is this area calculator not enough?
This calculator is suitable for common geometric shapes. If the shape is irregular, based on coordinates, measured from a map, or part of a three-dimensional solid, a different method is needed.

Should I enter diameter or radius for a circle?
This calculator asks for radius. If you know the diameter, divide it by 2 and enter the result as the radius.
Is triangle height the same as a side length?
