The Place Value Calculator provided by Hesapstan shows each digit in an integer or decimal number with its place name and place value in a table.

Place value means the value a digit has because of its position

A digit does not always have the same value. Its value depends on where it appears in the number. In 425, the digit 4 is in the hundreds place, so its place value is 400.

This calculator reads the number digit by digit and displays a table with the digit, its place name, and the value contributed by that digit.

Direct definition

Place value is the value of a digit after considering its position in the number.

Whole-number place names grow from right to left

In the whole-number part, the rightmost digit is in the ones place. Moving left gives tens, hundreds, thousands, and larger places.

  • Ones place: digit × 1
  • Tens place: digit × 10
  • Hundreds place: digit × 100
  • Thousands place: digit × 1000

For 425, the rows are 4 in the hundreds place with value 400, 2 in the tens place with value 20, and 5 in the ones place with value 5.

Decimal place values show parts smaller than one

Digits to the right of the decimal point have fractional place values. The first digit is tenths, the second is hundredths, and the third is thousandths.

For 3.14, the digit 3 is in the ones place, 1 is in the tenths place, and 4 is in the hundredths place. Their place values are 3, 0.1, and 0.04.

Decimal input

The calculator accepts decimal comma and decimal dot input according to the contract, so 3.14 and 3,14 can be interpreted as decimal forms.

The output table has one row for each digit

After you enter a number, the result table separates the number into digits. Each row shows the digit, the place name, and the place value.

  • Enter an integer or decimal number.
  • Read the place name for each digit.
  • Use the place value column to see what each digit contributes to the number.
  • Empty or invalid input is rejected.

This calculator is not an expanded form or base conversion tool

The place value table shows the value of each digit. If you want a number written as 400 + 20 + 5 or in expanded notation, use the Expanded Form Calculator instead.

No binary or hexadecimal conversion

This calculator shows decimal place values. It does not convert numbers to binary, hexadecimal, or other bases.

Examples show the digit, the place name, and the value together

For 425, the table means: 4 → hundreds → 400; 2 → tens → 20; 5 → ones → 5.

For 3.14, the table means: 3 → ones → 3; 1 → tenths → 0.1; 4 → hundredths → 0.04.

These examples show why the same digit can have different values in different positions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is place value?

Place value is the value a digit has because of its position in a number. In 425, the digit 4 is worth 400 because it is in the hundreds place.

Is digit value the same as place value?

No. The digit value is the digit itself, while place value includes its position. The digit 4 has place value 400 in 425 but 40 in 42.

How are decimal place values read?

Digits after the decimal point are read as tenths, hundredths, thousandths, and so on. In 3.14, 1 is tenths and 4 is hundredths.

Does this calculator show expanded form?

No. It shows a digit-by-digit table. For expanded form such as 400 + 20 + 5, use the Expanded Form Calculator.

Can I enter decimals with comma or dot?

Yes. The contract states that decimal comma and decimal dot are accepted. Avoid mixing separators in a confusing way.

Are zeros shown in the table?

Yes. A zero can be shown in its place, but its place value is 0. This helps explain zeros as placeholders.

Can this convert numbers to binary or hexadecimal?

No. This is a decimal place value calculator, not a number-base converter.

Is there a limit for very long numbers?

The calculator is intended for normal educational inputs. Very long numbers may run into practical display or supported-range limits.
