The Hesapstan week number calculator is designed to calculate which week of the year a date you select falls on, according to the ISO 8601 standard. The result also shows the week's start and end dates (Monday to Sunday) and the total number of weeks in that ISO year (52 or 53).
How is the ISO 8601 week number calculated?
In the ISO 8601 standard, weeks start on Monday, and week 1 is defined as the week containing the year's first Thursday. Because of this, the first few days of a calendar year can sometimes belong to the last week (52 or 53) of the previous ISO year, and the last few days of a year can belong to week 1 of the following ISO year.
For example, January 1, 2027 is a Friday, and even though this date falls in the calendar year 2027, it still belongs to week 53 of ISO year 2026 under ISO 8601 week numbering.
How many weeks are in an ISO year?
Most ISO years have 52 weeks, but some years have 53. This depends on which day of the week January 1 falls on and whether the year is a leap year. The tool calculates and shows the total week count automatically.
When is this useful?
Week numbers are commonly used in project planning, payroll/shift schedules, production calendars, academic calendars, and international business processes, e.g. "delivery in week 13." This tool lets you quickly find the ISO week for any date.
What does this tool not calculate?
- It does not calculate US-style week numbering (Sunday-start weeks); it uses only the ISO 8601 (Monday-start) standard.
- It does not calculate in reverse; this version does not directly answer "what date range is week 42?"
- It does not calculate using the Hijri or any other calendar system; it works in the Gregorian calendar only.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the ISO 8601 week number?
It is an international date/week numbering standard where weeks start on Monday and week 1 is the week containing the year's first Thursday.
Why can the first days of a year sometimes belong to the previous year's last week?
Because in ISO 8601, a week is numbered based on which year's Thursday it contains, not which calendar year it starts in. So January 1 can sometimes fall in week 52 or 53 of the previous ISO year.
Does every year have exactly 52 weeks?
No. Most years have 52 weeks, but some years (where January 1 is a Thursday, or a Wednesday in a leap year) have 53 weeks.
Does this tool support US-style week numbering?
No, this tool uses only the international ISO 8601 standard (Monday-start weeks).
